!Nicasius, son of Laurens and Walburga and the first in the family to emigrate, was born in Arnheim in 1610. He studied at the universities of Leyden and Orleans, from where he graduated, a Doctor of Law. He was a High Council, a Fiscal, and an Advocate to the Court of Holland, as well as a captain.
!"Nicasius de Sille was a man of unusual acquirements, an author, a
statesman, a lawyer, an expert in military affairs with especial knowledge of
fortifications; he came here in 1653 a widower with five children."
"De Sille came from a prominent family in the Republic. His grandfather,
whose namesake he was, had been pensionary of Amsterdam and was
reputedly responsible for drafting the Treaty of Utrecht, which had created
the Republic of the seven United Provinces in 1579. His father Laurens was
for a while burgomaster of Arnheim, where on September 23, 1610, Nicasius
was born.
He studied law and became an advocate at the Court of Holland, not
neglecting his military duty. When, after the Remonstrance of 1650 and the
near recall of Stuyvesant in 1652, the Heeren XIX looked around for an
'expert and able statesman' to be Stuyvesant's first councillor (and possibly
his successor), their eyes fell on the forty-two year-old De Sille, a widower
with five children." (p. 275) [Ref. Schuyler van Renssalaer History of the
City of New York in the 17th Century, Vol. 1, p. 353]
!They offered him a monthly salary of one hundred guilders, and he sailed in August 1653 with his two sons, three daughters, and a maid. [Ref. Brodhead & O'Callaghan, Documents relative to the Colonial History of New York, II, p. 400]
!"Enemy ships and pirates were another hazard, and when the councillor-poet Nicasius de Sille made his crossing in 1653, his pinnace had to battle three times with the English." (p. 25)
!At first de Sille was welcomed by Van Tienhoven, Stuyvesant's unpopular deputy, but soon Stuyvesant and Van Tienhoven were both jealous of "the intelligent and charming newcomer." (p. 276). Stuyvesant took De Sille along on the expedition against New Sweden, "so as not to let him out of his sight." (p. 276)
!In 1655 there was a confrontation at Fort Christina with the Swedes, under the command of Johan Rysingh. Stuyvesant sent a small fleet of ships with instructions to claim the South River for the Dutch. The Dutch grouped themselves into three divisions and surrounded the fort. "The one under Stuyvesant dug in north of Christina, three hundred feet from its walls, with four cannon, of which one was an eighteen-pounder. The company of Frederick de Koningh, the captain of the Waegh, constructed at the south side a battery with three guns; while northwest of the fort the third company, under the command of Councillor Nicasius de Sille, completed the encircling with two twelve-pounders." (p. 268) After a siege of ten days, as the Dutch soldiers began to roam around the countryside, robbing and pillaging, the Swedes surrendered. Stuyvesant immediately had to return to New Amsterdam, where a force of 900 Indians had gathered to threaten Manhattan, in what became known as the Peach War.
!De Sille was upset at the disorderly conditions around New Amsterdam and wrote to his friend company director Hans Bontemantel, advising Bontemantel to replace Stuyvesant with a new governor. At the same time Stuyvesant was writing to New Amsterdam that De Sille was a man "without experience, in whom I have no confidence." (p. 277) In May 1656 the company responded in support of De Sille, ordering Stuyvesant to dismiss Van Tienhoven, whom they blamed for the Peach War, and appointing De Sille as his replacement as schout-fiscaal. Van Tienhoven disappeared; his hat and cane were found floating in the river.(p. 278) It was Van Tienhoven who was described as running around "As an Indian, with a little covering and a small patch in front from lust after the Prostitutes." (p. 173)
!"Nicasius De Sille, fifty years old in 1660, had made his peace with General
Stuyvesant, and his influence had grown consistently. After the dismissal of
Cornelis van Tienhoven in 1656, De Sille had for four years been the
schout-fiscaal for both province and capital. Stuyvesant had even taken a
liking to his contemporary, admitting freely that his first assistant was
'better versed in offensive and defensive siege operations .. than your
humble servant.' (pp. 363-4)
"The intelligent and witty De Sille had fallen in love with New Netherland,
and he had kept the promise he made in 1654: "I shall not try to leave it as
long as I live." He had discovered a favorite corner of Long island, where he
founded New Utrecht. He was the first schout of the little hamlet, where he
built his mansion, a house forty-two feet long, topped with a roof of red tiles
and surrounded with a high stockade. Dividing his time between his duties
as councillor, fiscaal, and churchwarden in New Amsterdam and that of 'lord
of the manor' and schout at New Utrecht, he still found time to write a
Description of the Founding or Beginning of New Utrecht from 1657 till
1660. [DCH, I, p. 633] (p. 364)
"It was a great day for his infant settlement when in February 1660 General
Stuyvesant came to visit. De Sille presented the village with the Prince's
flag, while one of the citizens prepared a dinner 'in as good a stile as the
place could afford.' Stuyvesant stayed only very briefly, advising them to
surround the village with 'good heavy palisades' as protections against the
Indians. To prove he was serious, he sent them some Negroes to help in
building the stockade." (p. 364) [DCH, p. 413]
In 1659 De Sille asked for a divorce from his wife, Catherina Cregier, on
account of her drunkenness. Stuyvesant tried to "patch up" the marriage
unsuccessfully.
"De Sille retired more and more often to his country estate, where he
revealed that under the dignified cloak of the councillor and the stern
harness of the soldier, there beat the heart of a poet. Almost all his poems
were dedicated to the place he loved so much and which he considered his
creation, New Utrecht:
I now am satisfied by th'honor of my name,
By grain and orchard fruit, by horses and by kine,
By plants and by a race of men -- all growth of mine." (p. 365)
!He wrote a poem praising the weather in New Netherland. (p. 26)
But heat and sunshine now - a bright and genial sky
Infuse in me new life and nourishment supply.
[With a reference to Henry C. Murphy, Anthology of New Netherland, p.
191]
!In 1663 there was trouble with the English. Various ambassadors went back and forth to Massachusetts. Various angry messages were exchanged. Threats of violence were made. "In an attempt to calm the situation Councillors De Sille, Van Cortlandt, and Van der Grift dispatched a letter to the English villages, warning them against 'diverse persons driven with a spirit of mutiny ayming at nothing but to fish in troubled waters'." (p. 420) The immediate crisis passed, but the end of New Netherlands was in sight.
!The following year, when the English fleet arrived to demand the surrender of New Netherlands, it was De Sille who pieced together the letter which Stuyvesant had angrily torn up. (p. 461)
!In 1664 Sir Richard Nicholls led a fleet of four English ships into the
harbor of New Amsterdam and demanded the surrender of the colony. He
sent a delegation, led by John Winthrop who gave Stuyvesant a letter
advising him to accept the terms offered by the English. Stuyvesant was
infuriated and tore the letter to pieces.
"It was the desperate gesture of a man who knew that he was alone." The
people were afraid of the English. An angry mob confronted Stuyvesant and
demanded to see the letter. He gave the pieces to Nicasius de Sille, who
glued it together and gave it to Stuyvesant's English clerk to translate it
and deliver it to the burgomasters. The next morning they gave a petition to
Stuyvesant asking him to surrender. It was signed by the most important
people of New Amsterdam, including Martin Cregier. Stuyvesant agreed and
the treaty was signed a few days later.
!Nicasius de Sille, b. 1610, m. 1) Cornelia Meulmans, 2) Tryntje Cregier or Crouger, apparently not the daughter of Martin Cregier.
!Children of Nicasius & Cornelia:
!Since Laurens went back to Holland about 1663 there are no descendants in
this country with the name of de Sille.
