"Mill... East Band Pine Brook in the center of Tinton Falls, New Shrewsbury...
In 1677 James Grover, on of the original Monmouth Patentees, arrived in
Middletown from Gravesend, Long Island. He became the first clerk and surveyor
of Middletown. ...He and some friend decided that the wet boggy meadow, near
the swimming river, contained deposits of iron ore so they bought a large tract
at the falls of Shrewsbury, now Tinton Falls.
He brought from England two millwrights, James and Henry Leonard. They
established a furnace and began to mine the nearby bogs. But after a year, Oct
25, 1675, Grover and his partners sold the furnace and 3540 acres to Lewis
Morris who came here from the Barbadoes. He opperated the forge and by 1680 he
had as labor force of seventy slaves and many white workers. The iron was said
to be of good quality. At the time a ton of bar iron was bringing 18 Pounds
Sterling in London.
Lewis Morris came from Monmouthshire, Wales...ancestral home Tintern
Manor...Tinton named after... When He died the property (in NJ) passed to his
nephew of the same name.... (in 1714)...asked lords to encourage iron
interests in province of New Jersey.

"Staffordshire- Leonard:
Henry, James; Parish: Bilston; Ship: ______; New England Town: Braintree and
Taunton, Mass.; Various References: NEGR 5/104.
[ I looked up Bilston in NEWNES MOTORISTS TOURING MAPS AND GAZETTEER; ; London,
George Newnes, Limited, 1964; p 47,48 Printed by John Bartholemew and Son LTD.,
Edinburgh. - Bilston is between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, both industrial
centers. Bilston is approximately four miles from Wolverhampton which the
Encyclopedia Britannica says is dominated by Iron and Steel foundries. In my
mind this provides an easily acceptable reason why Henry and James are listed
Banks' Dictionary as being from Bilston, Staffordshire. It is likely they were
employed in, or by someone doing business in, the Iron industry there. ]
Henry Leonard is supposed to have died in Monmouth Co., NJ, however, I am not yet aware of any documentation of this. I wonder if he was involved in the construction and/or operation of additional iron furnaces/forges and may have died and been buried elsewhere?
