!Henry A. Stoutenburgh, A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY OF THE DUTCH CONGREGATION OF OYSTER BAY, QUEENS COUNTY, ISLAND OF NASSAU (now Long Island); ; p. 140-141. "Mary, the widow, was living as late as Jan., 1697."
!NOTES from SueLong@@aol.com 14 Jan 1997. Mary was almost of marriageable age when her mother and stepfather emigrated, for she was widowed and remarried to William Ariens Bennet, by about 1636 when their first children was born. Once again she was widowed at about the same time as her mother Altje, for in 1644 they each remarried. The third time they were both more fortunate. Mary married third Paulus Venderbeeck, who was a surgeon, employed by the Dutch West India Company, also a ferrymaster. He died in 1680, leaving Mary a widow yet again, but in her old age. Aeltje left her estate with her third husband to her daughter Mary; perhaps Aeltje's other children were provided for by the estate of Cornelis Cool, their father.

Notes: Shown on a pedigree of the Talcott family in the 1634 Visitation of Essex. This is on p497 of the Visitation and is from the Harleian Society edition based on a copy of the Visitation in the Harleian Manuscripts held at the British Library. Also shown on the official version at The College of Arms, London. Source - Patrick L. Dickinson, Richmond Herald, College of Arms, Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 4BT, 25 March 1996. Note - In the College of Arms version the name is spelt TALCOT throughout but is signed Tho: TALCOTT.
"John Talcott of Colchester - 1st wife ...... d. of .......... Wells - 2nd wife Mary d. of Pullen"
Shown on a pedigree of the Talcott family in the 1664 Visitation of Essex. This is on p90 of J.J.Howard's 1888 edition of the visitation. Source - Patrick L. Dickinson, Richmond Herald, College of Arms, Queen Victoria Street, London EC4V 4BT, 25 March 1996. This pedigree is signed T. TALCOTT.
"John Talcott of ......... in com. Warwick."
[in com. = in comitatus = in the county (of)]
^See all on Arms below.
Could have been born in Warwickshire as we had previously thought (before receiving Mr Dickinson's letter below) - DJT.
2 Essex IGI entries appear possibly to relate to this John :- 1. John Talcott JR b. abt 1524, of Colchester. 2. John Talcott b. abt 1536, of Colchester.
DWT has b. 1538, Colchester.
Essex IGI John Talcott m. Marie Pullen 1569 (No place but probably St Mary's Colchester. PR not checked).
Red Book AO2TY (re children via Marie Pullen) :- "SVT's book omits the two Williams and Benjamin, whilst ETT's Pedigree omits Marie, Grace, Joanna & Eme".
Made a Will 24 Sept 1606, admitted to probate 12 Nov 1606.
Pewterer in the Parish of St Peters 1578, when sole executor to his cousin William 700 (B01TY/-3). Land owner.
Probably received the original family "Grant of Arms". [JPT]
(We do not have anything saying this John was an armiger - DJT - but see Thomas 610)
From Morant's Colchester p171/2:-
From a long-winded document for endowing a free school:
"the tenement late John Wells, baker, and now John Talcot, in part." - The date is "the 27th year of the Reign of Queen Elizabeth." (1585).
Essex IGI - Abt 1578. "s" Talcot, Miss. John Talcot / Miss Wells.
Essex IGI - Abt 1576. b. Talcott, Miss. John Talcott / Miss Wells
(If the dates are wrong these will be daughters bap. to John & Alice - Anne & Elizabeth - if dates right then two more daughters). JPT feels, and I tend to agree with him, that 'Miss' is probably a mis-reading of Aliss.
Essex IGI - m. John Talcott Sp: Aliss Wells.
Similar entries appear on the Warks IGI with dates that read 1538 & 1550 !
Essex RO Q/SR128/16 & Q/SR129/6
1594/5 - A John Talcott was on the Jury Panel for the Hundred of Becontree in July 1594 & for the Hundred of Hinckford in December 1594. Q/SR129/6 has a note hand-written on the reverse stating "Sessions held 9 & 10 January 37 Elizabeth [AD1594-5]" (copy to John 404 & John 408).

From Essex RO info on other non-parochial churches "In the second half of the 16th century, a considerable number of refugees from the Low Countries settled in Colchester where they established their own church". (Witness Winken Bassell may have been Dutch? - DJT).
Tainters. - Wooden framework on which cloth was stretched after milling, so that it would dry evenly and without shrinking. (Also called tenters, and usually erected in the fields around, the expression 'on tenterhooks' - anxious or uneasy position - comes from this).
According to "Parker - Talcott - Randolph and Allied Families, Our Tangled Roots and Branches, Vol.I" Published 1990 by Kitty Randolph (Hilton) Oman of 8701 N.E. Pierce Dr., Vancouver, WA 98662 :- At the bottom of the above will "Wintien Bassell" and also "A.C. From JPT's book AppVIII p1:- "We have no definite information on the reasons for the Grant of Arms or why the Arms, Crest and Motto were designed in the way they are. Nevertheless, we know that the Griffin emblem was shown on leaden seals used in the Colchester wool-cloth business (App.IX) and that the Colchester Talcotts were involved both in the Pewter and the wool-cloth trades. The leaden seals are very likely to have been made by Pewterers, pewter being a lead-tin alloy. It seems almost certain that this is where the Griffin on the family Crest must have originated."
Old Pewter its Makers and Marks, Howard Herschell Cotterell, B.T.Batsford Ltd, London. "Illustrating all known marks and secondary marks of the old pewterers, with a series of plates showing the chief types of their wares".
There is no 'Taylcote' (or any variant) in the alphabetical list of pewterers. There does not appear to be any mention of the Colchester area either. In chapter VII, a list of unidentified marks, p376, 5905, is a picture of a griffin in a shield with the letters T & R either side of the griffin, within the shield. The caption is :- R......, T......, of? : c.1670. (Apparently the letters as above were always written 'back to front' on the stamp, i.e. 'John Smith' would be stamped S J. These were called 'Touch Marks'.)
We have three Roberts descended from John 404 who may have followed him in the pewter trade, however, given the sparse details this is pure speculation! The book above is generally taken as the "pewterers bible" and was lent to me by Bob Otto, a pewter restorer, living here in Devon, 1995. He could not give me any other clues regarding the Colchester 'Taylcott' pewterers. Apparently some pewterers in the provinces did not have their own marks but were working on behalf of others e.g. in London. Raw materials would have been transported to them, in return they would send back finished articles for stamping.
